Een legendarische filosoof Lʻo Zʼ (circa 580-470 v.Chr.)
Lao Zi had de achternaam Li en zijn voornaam Er. Lao Zi is een eretitel. Het is algemeen bekend dat Lao Zi een van de meest vereerde filosofen in de Chinese geschiedenis is. Er bestaan talloze legendes over zijn geboorte, carrière, onderwijs en filosofische ideeën.
Volgens een populaire legende werd Lao Zi verwekt toen zijn moeder een ster in haar schoot zag vallen en bleef hij 80 jaar in de baarmoeder. Bij zijn geboorte was hij al een volwassen man met een grijze baard en lange oorlellen, een symbool van geluk en een lang leven.
Hij beheerde ooit de archieven van het koninklijk hof tijdens de Zhou-dynastie (circa 11e eeuw – 256 v.Chr.). Later nam hij echter ontslag en trok naar het westen om zijn ideeën en filosofie te verspreiden.
Op een dag, rijdend op een os, naderde hij de Hangu-pas en werd tegengehouden door Yinxi, een wachter die de pas bewaakte. Als trouwe volgeling van Lao Zi’s filosofie herkende de officier de grote meester onmiddellijk. Maar om Lao Zi te vragen hem iets van zijn filosofie bij te brengen, eiste de officier dat de oude man een officiële vergunning voor het verlaten van het land overlegde. Lao Zi had geen document, dus stemde hij ermee in een essay van 5000 woorden over zijn filosofie te schrijven in ruil voor een doorgang naar het Westen. Dat essay bleek de beroemde Daodejing (ook wel “Tao Te Ching” genoemd), ofwel het “Boek der Deugd”.
Geleerden over de hele wereld discussiëren nog steeds over de vraag of het boek daadwerkelijk door Lao Zi is geschreven of door zijn studenten en discipelen is samengesteld.
Ze zijn het er echter allemaal over eens dat het boek Lao Zi’s gedachtegoed weerspiegelt. In het boek gebruikt Lao Zi het concept van Dao (Tao) om alle veranderingen in het universum te verklaren. Dao, dat ook wel vertaald wordt als “Weg” of “Grote Integriteit”, wordt beschouwd als de mysterieuze bron of het ideaal van al het bestaan.
Lao Tzu’s “Tao Te Ching” is een klassieker van de Chinese filosofie. De beste manier om dit werk echt te begrijpen, is door naar China te komen en een voltijdse Chinese cursus te volgen. China is hét land om Chinees te leren en biedt niet alleen hoogwaardige taalcursussen, maar ook de mogelijkheid om traditionele culturele activiteiten zoals Chinese festivals van dichtbij mee te maken.

Kunming’s scenery is very beautiful. It is the best place to study Chinese in China. My favorite learning method at Keats School is one-on-one because it is suitable for everyone. The air quality is great, good weather. The people here are very friendly. I come to take classes every day. I feel comfortable studying Chinese at Keats. Last year I started studying Chinese at University. The reason that I came here is that currently, I’m preparing for the HSK 5 test. Also, I heard that this is one of the best schools to study Mandarin in China. After I came here I realized that Kunming is a pretty cool city to live in and with regards to the teachers’ teaching methods, I think they’re very professional. And I think the language environment is good so now I’m ready to take the HSK 5.
I come to Kunming because I think the environment in Kunming is better and I heard that Keats School is better. I like the small group Chinese class because my classmates study hard and our teachers are very good. I like the teaching method of Keats because I like the activities at Keats. I think Yunnan is a particularly beautiful Chinese province.
I have really enjoyed the Chinese course in China at Keats and meeting the teachers here and the students. We have a lot of fun in class. It is a really great school to learn with good teaching methods and a really good textbook, examples and games, and everything.
