WHY LEARN MANDARIN IN KUNMING, CHINA

It’s time to start thinking about what city you’re going to choose to study in when you come to China. With China being a massive nation, with nearly 1.4 billion people, there’s a lot to think about when deciding on why you should learn the Mandarin language and where you should study it.

For many people, Kunming is their first choice. Kunming is the capital and largest city in Yunnan Province, Southwest China. The city has a population of 6 million people and is the cultural, political, economic and communications center of the province.

Kunming has beautiful weather, limited air pollution, a growing population and it’s safe. It sounds pretty nice, doesn’t it? We agree… that’s why we call this beautiful city home and hope that you will too.

In this blog post, we share with you why people are choosing Kunming as the city they want to learn Mandarin in.

WHY LEARN MANDARIN IN KUNMING? THE STUDENT POPULATION

Yunnan is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in China. Ethnic minorities make up 33.6% of the province’s total population, and the numbers are growing with the number of people arriving in Kunming to study Mandarin.

Schools like Keats offer Culture classes so students can learn Mandarin and go home with a better understanding of the Chinese culture.

WHY LEARN MANDARIN LANGUAGE IN KUNMING? AIR QUALITY IS UNLIKE OTHER CHINESE CITIES

Air pollution is something that concerns a lot of people who plan to travel to China. Kunming has been named one of the top 5 cities with the least amount of air pollution, so it shouldn’t be your top concern in Kunming.

Kunming’s air quality index usually rests around 42, or good. In comparison, larger cities like Beijing rests around 60, or moderate/unhealthy. LA is 61, NY is 59, and Honolulu, Toronto, and Miami rest around 41.

These numbers do change daily. Visit Numbeo to review pollution numbers closer to the date of your departure.

WHY STUDY MANDARIN IN KUNMING? IT’S SAFE

Being safe is of utmost importance while studying abroad. You need to feel comfortable in your new home, and your family also needs to feel at ease knowing you’re safe in your new city.

While there is a crime in every city, Kunming has an overall low crime index and a very low index for violent and hate crimes. On the website Numbeo, the level of crime for Kunming is 25/100, or low.

Problem violent crimes have a rating of 16/100, or very low, and crimes based on your skin color, ethnic origin, or religion are 0/100. The worry of being broken into, mugged, robbed, or having things stolen is 33/100 or low. According to TripAdvisor, Kunming is a safe travel destination for both male and female travelers.

STUDYING IN KUNMING WILL BE AN ADVENTURE

You’ve decided that Kunming, China is the best place for you to study Mandarin, but now you’re thinking, “what can I do when I’m not studying?”

It’s an earnest question, and we’re here to answer it for you.

Kunming, China, is known for its beautiful, breathtaking, unique landscapes and, not to mention, has the nickname “city of eternal spring.” What city could beat that?

While we could write 100 different things you need to do while studying in Kunming, three of our top locations are here.

  1. Dongchuan Red Land – If you want to look out at the landscape and be in awe that such a beautiful view exists, you’re going to want to visit Dongchuan Red Land. The colors of the land combined make it look like someone magically dropped a palette of paint on the ground to create this natural masterpiece. You can see reds, greens, whites, and yellows together in the hills.
  2. The Stone Forest – These amazing karst formations are located in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, around 90km east of Kunming. The tall rocks seem to pop up from the ground, with many looking like petrified trees, which explains the name “The Stone Forest.”
  3. Kunming Dragon Gate – Just to the west of Kunming, practically right next door to Dianchi Lake, the Sleeping Buddha Hill rises above the city. The nickname was created because when you look at the Western Hills from a distance, they look like a giant sleeping Buddha.

I come to Kunming because I think the environment in Kunming is better and I heard that Keats School is better. I like the small group Chinese class because my classmates study hard and our teachers are very good. I like the teaching method of Keats because I like the activities at Keats. I think Yunnan is a particularly beautiful Chinese province.

I think the Chinese learning environment here is great. The teaching methods are also very interactive and fun. What I particularly enjoy here is the fact that my teacher does not stick to the textbook. We spend a lot of time discussing general topics, such as Chinese culture, world news, typical expressions used by local people. We also discuss social and economic topics.

Intensive One-on-One Chinese Classes

I have been to Keats School to learn Chinese for 4 times now. The reason for coming back to this school is pretty much that the teachers I did work with were very good Chinese teachers. I make it a 5-year plan or even a 10-year plan to come back to this school.  All the teachers have methods of looking at what your skills are. They are aware of at what level you are. I think it is worth for everyone.

The place is very cool. I am with a great group of people in my class, so coming to classes is very enjoyable. It is fun, we have a lot of discussions, games, activities. Our teachers are also very good, very supportive. Learning Chinese is intimidating at the start because you have so many questions. But I would advise coming to Keats because the atmosphere for learning is great. It is very relaxing. I would recommend the school.

It doesn’t matter what level of Chinese you have, or even you can start from the zero level. Your teacher will prepare the lessons according to your requirements. The advantage of living in the school is that you will have your tutoring, you will have your private accommodation with your own bathroom and all the meals provided. I highly recommend everybody to actually take the whole package because you get to meet other students.
